Pigs n' guinea pigs in Ecuador

I think no matter how long I could be here, I would never get used to this! I am not sure how one purchases meat from this critter. Gonna have to learn more Spanish and then visit with these folks!

This trip to Baños we decided to eat a little guinea pig. It is nice that they don't just throw the wole thing on a plate. Ecuadorians have been eating these little critters for many years and appears to have been a main source of meat prior to the introduction of beef. Nowadays they eat them on special occasions and with special guests. They are larger and meatier than the US pet guinea pig. Some parts tasted like chicken, some parts tasted like a wet dog smells, and some parts were really greasy and left a film on the roof of my mouth. The price for a whole guinea pig was $20.00. That is 10 hours wages for an Ecuadorian.

Funny, Em was grossed out by the turkey leg at Wyoming State Fair a couple years ago but didn't see anything wrong with chowing down on this little leg!
